Vlachava Dimitra – Farazoumi Sophia,
Holy Temple of St. Nicolas in Krini and Holy Temple of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Asproklisia: History background and restoration proposals of two small Byzantine Temples
This report concerns two small Byzantine Temples , Holy Temple of St. Nicolas in Krini and Holy Temple of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Asproklisia. These temples are two of the four single-room temples that are located in the region of Trikala. Only few arch-covered and wooden-roof singleroom temples have been identified in Thessaly despite the fact that this type along with the cruciform-shaped temples was prevalent during the Mid Byzantine and the Late Byzantine era. Through the avocation with these two temples and the comparison with the rest of the same type temples in Thessaly, we can reach to the conclusion that monuments in this category were widely spread and also safely assume that the small monasteries and temples, that are mentioned as adnexal parts of big Thessalian Monasteries, were probably of the same type, and now they are either destroyed or various restorations do not allow us to identify their initial architectural form.
Consequently, for the restoration of the two temples, the ascertainment of the damages and the planning of how to repair them or how to reinforce their structure are not enough. A deeper research is required so that we can fully acknowledge the reaction of the monument's structure s to different operations. Moreover, their pathology must be evalu.1ted so that the best possible restoration tactic will be proposed that will preserve the monuments without understating their spiritual values and messages.
