The libraries of Meteora, one of the most important monastic centres besides Mount Athos, containmore than 1200 manuscripts. From the late 16th century onwards this valuable collection was a subject ofgreat interest for manuscript collectors and many western travellers who were interested in acquiring someof them. This article investigates the conditions under which many Meteora manuscripts ended up in foreignlibraries, as well as the concern of the Meteora monks in protecting their spiritual treasures.
