Valais, Dionysios, The monasteries of St Modestos and Alyssos of Meteora (An initial recording and processing of the historical data)
This paper examines the historical data on the monasteries of St Modestos and Alyssos of Meteora. According to available sources, traces of St Modestos monastery existence are probably found in the middle of the 12th century, while the operation of both is attested in a 17th century monastic economic catalogue. It is unknown how long they were a place of monks’ residence. Nevertheless, since the end of the 18th century they are mentioned among the destroyed monasteries of Meteora. Nowadays, the few ruins of their buildings, which have survived on the homonymous huge rocks near the town of Kalambaka, are the undoubted witnesses of their historical presence.
