Summary
Gouloulis Stavros, «Synaxis of the seven Archbishops of Larissa»
The metropolite of Larissa Neophytos II (1550-1569) and the metropolitan Church of Saint Stephanos at Trikala Ιn the north ambulatory of the temple of Hagioi Anargyroi at Trilkala (1627) an unicum ensemble is historiated in fresco, the seven saint archbishops of Larissa [1. Tomas Choriatis ( Gorianites): 1261 / 62- 1274/75], 2. Kyprianos Thaumaturgos [1318-1332], 3. Antonios Logiotatos and New Theologos [1333-1363+], 4. Bessarion Proen (=previous) [1489/90 f.], 5. Dionysios Eleemon (=Charitable) [before 1499/1500], 6. Markos Asketes (ascetic) [1499/1500-1527], 7. Bessarion tou Sotiros (of Saint Soter=monastery of Dousiko) [1527-1540]. (Ιn a posterior period the oblong ambulatory has been transformed to a chapel dedicated to Saint Spyridon). The self-taught hieromonach Chatzi-Gerasimos, monk of the Dousiko Monastery ( c.1790-1865) gives a catalogue of the same archbishops of Larissa in the codex 76 Dousikou (pp. 219-220) (1846) and in codex 59 Dousikou (pp. 81-82) (1858). He adds new informations that also "the seven saints had been historiated in the narthex (north ambulatory) of Hagioi Anargyroi, as well as in the metropolitan church of Saint Stephanos", metropolitan cathedral of archbishop of Larissa in Trikala (c. 1318-1739). The church of Saint Stephanos is dated before the sixties of seventeenth century. Afterwards, in the years 1691-1694, under the permission of the ottoman authorities of Trikala, the church has been restored. That means that the church had been already built several decennies ago. The church of Saint Stephanos in 1882 has been burnt and the new church was built in 1896.
Ιn this article a reconstruction of the representation of the seven hierarchs is proposed, a new conception of their nicknames in an environment of a high theological school and a new proposal that the first time the whole holy team had been historiated was in the cathedral of Saint Stephanos or in a chapel annexed in the period of metropolite Neophytos ΙΙ (1550-1568), a nephew of Saint Bessarion II, in the same period of his canonisation about 1552/53. At that time in Trikala coexisted several known teachers and pupils who became famous later, thanks to the bold personality of Neophytos ΙΙ "who recieved permission and authority" («άδειαν καί εξουσίαν») to wear the sakkos of archbishops (1558). According to the opinion of patriarch Ioasaph (1556-1565), he has been appraised as the best metropolite of Larissa (κρείσσονα) in comparison of all his predecessors. The theological school was in work until the period of Jeremias (the patriarch of Constantinople), former metropolite of Larissa (1568/9-1572).
